Gandhigram, founded in Tamil Nadu in 1947 by Dr. T.S. Soundaram and Dr. G. Ramachandran, disciples of Mahatma Gandhi, aimed to empower villages through holistic development. Initially focused on primary education, it later expanded to social welfare, healthcare, and self-employment through spinning and weaving. During its inauguration, Gandhiji sent a telegram with the handwritten message: "Success Attains Where Truth Reigns."

Devanga Chettiyar, Hindu community from South India, that traditionally follows the occupation of weaving, textile merchandise and farming. Naiyudu community is also involved in weaving for them.

Only KI in the region spinning and weaving 100's count Khadi yarn fabric Soft texture material. Specialize in spinning and weaving 4 different counts of yarn, Sarees, fabric yardages, scarves, towels, dhotis, napkins. Natural dyed fabrics and yarns.

Sari

Design Process
They make about 10 to 20 new designs per month including for saris, towels, shirting and yardage.
Know your Khadi Institution

Artisans
200 artisans including 150 spinners and 50 weavers spread over 4 different locations. 4 preprocessing unit employees, 5 dyers and 4 natural dyers. 350 full time employees.

Spinners
Older weavers have more than 40 years of experience. Majority of the spinners are older women.

Dyeing
Gandhigram Khadi has one of the largest indigo vat dyeing houses amongst all Khadi institutions.

Weaving
The KI holds a total of 67 looms out of which 47 are pitlooms owned by weavers and the rest are pedal looms on which plain weave, kora, yarn dyed fabric and dhotis are woven.
