Mehta Khadi Udyog Gruh
Mehta Khadi Udyog Gruh was established in 1975 under the leadership of Smt. Aruna Ben Desai. It is located in Wadhwan city, in the Surendranagar district of Gujarat. Aruna Ben moved to Wadhwan in 1945 and became associated with Vikas Vidyalaya, a social welfare society that also promoted Khadi. To expand its operations, a new trust was formed under the name Mehta Khadi. From there, Aruna Ben played a key role in expanding Khadi production to provide employment opportunities for both women and men in nearby villages.

In 2004, Jagdish Bhai took over as Secretary and managed operations until his passing. Following his demise, Daxa Ben Joshi was appointed Secretary in 2021. Since its inception, the Khadi Institution (KI) has been engaged in the production of Aasan durries, providing employment to durry weavers in Wadhwan and surrounding villages.

However, in recent years, the demand for Aasan durries has declined. As a result, the KI has diversified into the production of shirting fabrics since 2021.

Products of Mehta Khadi Gruh Udyog

Dhurries
Woven dhurries are the primary product of the KI. They produce two main types – simple woven dhurries and pile dhurries. Dhurries are manufactured in a wide range of sizes, from small mats to large floor coverings. A special mota sut, prepared on the Belni charkha, is used as the weft for these dhurries.

Woven Dhurries
Woven dhurries are available in 2 variations, the spray dhurry features a mélange effect, while the Navrang dhurry is distinguished by its use of multiple colors in weft to form bands of colour.

Shirting Fabrics & Apparel
The KI also produces cotton fabrics in 40s and 60s counts, primarily used for men’s shirting, kurtas, women’s kurtas, and handkerchiefs. In addition to fabrics, they manufacture a wide range of finished products, including men’s shirts, women’s kurtas, tops, skirts, chaniya cholis, cord sets, cushion covers, fabric purses, and bags

Spinning
The KI undertakes spinning for both dhurry yarns and finer fabric yarns using two types of charkhas – the Belni Charkha and the NMC Charkha.

Weaving
At Mehta Khadi, weaving is carried out entirely from the homes of local weavers. The KI engages around 35 dhurry weavers and 15 fabric weavers, working on traditional pit looms and 2-shaft looms.

Woven Dhurrie Weaving
Made with fine cotton warp and mota sut weft, in plain weave, producing a strong, weft-dominant texture. Variants include Spray Dhurry (mélange effect) and Navrang Dhurry (multi-colored stripes).

Pile Dhurrie Weaving
The pile dhurry involves a unique weaving process: The pile weft is first created by weaving 4-ply mota sut in the weft and then cutting the prepared fabric lengthwise at half-inch intervals to form stipes of pile yarn. This specially prepared weft is then used in weaving the pile dhurry.

Fabrics
The KI also weaves Khadi fabrics (kora, chambray, rumal) and polyvastra. Current production includes 60s cotton count in plain weave, with experiments in coarser counts underway.
