OUR STORY
The Ministry of MSME conceived the Centre of Excellence for Khadi (CoEK) to address the needs of the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC). Khadi benefits and struggles from centuries-old brand lineage; the program aspires to build on patronage and develop associations with high-end domestic and international markets. The Centre of Excellence for Khadi is envisaged to be a Centre for experimentation, innovation and design for Khadi fabrics, apparel, accessories and home fashions.
KHADI INSTITUTIONS
Khadi Institutions are certified institutions which produce and sell Khadi. Many of these institutions were formed under the guidance of Gandhi ji. These institutions have stood the test of time and have played a crucial role in the development of Khadi products supply chain.
In the first year of the program, CoEK is working with fifteen Khadi Institutions spread across all four regions of the country. These institutions are based in the states such as Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Assam, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and others.

Practised by Lambani women and enriched with cowries, beads, and coins, the craft reflects deep cultural heritage and holds a Geographical Indication (GI) tag.
When embroidered on khadi, it creates textiles that are both sustainable and fashion-forward. Sandur Kushala Kala Kendra supports these artisans, enabling dignified livelihoods while preserving their craftsmanship.

![What is ‘Ahimsa Silk’?
Eri silk is often called Ahimsa Silk, not as a label, but as a way of understanding how the fibre is made, where the silk is gathered without harming the silkworm.
How It Happens
Eri silkworms spin cocoons with a natural opening. This allows the moth to emerge freely. The fibre is collected only after its natural cycle is complete.
A Different kind of Silk
The Eri silkworm spins an open, zig-zag cocoon that lets the moth emerge naturally. This creates short, discontinuous fibres that are spun like cotton or wool, giving eri cotton or wool-like feel rather than the smooth, shiny texture of traditional silk.
Rooted in Balance
In North Eastern part of India, people rear Eri silkworms for both food and fibre, maintaining balance between consumption and continuity.
Made by Communities
Eri is produced by small-scale, family-run rural households. It is often a woman-dominated activity, who are involved in rearing, spinning, and weaving.
Sustainable Agriculture
Eri silkworms feed on castor plants, which are drought-resistant and low on water use. Castor can grow on marginal land and support a low-impact farming cycle

The team at CoEK experienced the craft of Indigenous varieties of cotton which included its cultivation and production process.
Brown cotton and Kondapatti (hill cotton) are among the many indigenous varieties of cotton fibre native to India. Brown cotton is distinguished by naturally occurring pigments, such as tannins and flavonoids, that permeate the fibre and impart its characteristic earthy hue.
Kondapatti (Hill cotton) on the other hand, exhibits minimal pigmentation, resulting in its distinctive off-white colour. Alarmed by the statement, CoEK explored recycling of waste denim. Under this initiative, discarded khadi denim was collected, sorted, shredded, and processed into slivers at Aadi Sustainability Solutions Pvt. Ltd., Panipat. The slivers were sent to Udyog Bharti, Gondal, a Khadi Institution, where the next phase of revival unfolds. The fibres travel onward to Khamir, an NGO in Bhuj, Kutch, where they were hand-spun on the traditional Peti Charkha, restoring human touch to a material. The hand-spun yarns return to Udyog Bharti, where skilled weavers bring them to life on the loom.
For this experiment, we blended 45% recycled denim and 65% virgin cotton.
Plain weaves are woven on pedal looms using a natural indigo warp (2/72s Nm), paired with recycled denim yarns of approximately 10s Nm in the weft. Lighter twills feature a kora warp (2/72s Nm) with recycled weft insertions. Heavier twills combine a natural charcoal warp with recycled cotton weft, resulting in a robust, textural fabric ideal for structured garments.

NATURE’S PALETTE- Dyeing with Natural Colourants
What fabrics we wear or apply on our skin, impacts our nervous system.
Natural dyes derived from plants, flowers, roots and minerals are gentle on the environment, safe for the skin and offer rich earthy colours that age beautifully. They represent traditional sustainable textile practices that continue to inspire modern craft.
Mr Manikandan is the expert dyer from Gandhigram Khadi Institute based in Dindigul, Tamil Nadu. Known for its long-standing commitment to sustainability, Gandhigram Khadi & V.I. Public Charitable Trust is one of India’s most respected Khadi institutions preserving hand-spinning, handweaving and natural dyeing traditions. The institute supports rural artisans and promotes eco-friendly production that reflects purity, simplicity and responsibility.
The hands-on workshop will be an introduction to three natural colouration techniques:
Indigo Dyeing: witness the magic of turning fabric colour from green to deep blue through natural oxidation of colourant from Indigofera tinctoria.
Marigold and Manjistha Dyeing: Explore vibrant yellows, oranges and reds from flowers and roots from these botanical colourants.
Eco Printing: Create delicate leaf and flower impressions on textiles

The event showcases an exhibition on Navyug Khadi : Khadi of a new era. Featuring Khadi institutions from various states of India, showcasing their unique talents such as surface techniques, unique weaves and many more. People are now invited to experience workshops of different kinds, such as Hand Spinning yarns, Natural Dyeing and Sari Draping.
