Nalanda Khadi Gramodyog Sangh

Established on 15th April 2021, Nalanda Khadi Gramodyog Vikas Sangh is a young yet promising Khadi institution located in Bihar Sharif, in the heart of Nalanda district, Bihar. Under the guidance of its secretary, Mr. Ratanlal, the institute has carved a niche for itself through its exquisite Tussar silk weaving, most notably the renowned “Bawan Butti” sarees, a celebration of Bihar’s weaving heritage and craftsmanship.

The institute houses 10–12 weavers and looms, with 8 functional looms situated within the main premises. Among these, 5 male and 3 female weavers contribute to the production process — the men primarily engaged in intricate extra weft (butti) weaving, while the women, who are relatively new to the craft, focus on plain yardages. Additionally, 2 women spinners are involved in yarn preparation, supporting the weaving activity.

It takes approximately 1.5 to 2 days to weave a Bawan Butti saree and about one day to weave a plain Tussar saree. The product range includes sarees, yardages, dupattas, and suit pieces, with an annual turnover of around ₹1 crore.
