Jamdani

Jamdani is a weaving technique where motifs are woven directly within a plain weave base using an extra weft. Each pattern is inserted by hand, almost like drawing with thread, giving the fabric its light, floating quality.

Rooted in the weaving traditions of Bengal, it is known for its fine, sheer texture and the time and precision it demands from the weaver. It’s a slow, thoughtful process where every motif is placed with care, making each piece feel quiet, detailed, and deeply personal.

Historically, Jamdani evolved from the famed muslins of Bengal - so fine that early travellers wrote about fabrics delicate enough to pass through a ring. It flourished under Mughal patronage, where these “flowered muslins” became symbols of refinement and were worn by royalty. Today, it continues as a living tradition, recognised as an Intangible Cultural Heritage.
